No writer is sui generis; we are all connected and when we read, there is a secret apprenticeship taking place, an underground call and response. It's the kind of apprenticeship to which William Jones alludes when he says, "We learn to swim in the winter and to skate in the summer." And it is what makes reading so important and so exciting.
